M.A. (Ayur)

Writer, teacher, practitioner, and culinary expert — bridging the purity of traditional Ayurveda with the realities of modern life.

Amita Nathwani

I'm the founder and practitioner at Surya Health and Wellness, where I specialize in Ayurvedic medicine and integrative health. My practice centers on digestive health and psychology — recognizing the profound connections between gut health, emotional well-being, lifestyle, and the way we eat.

Born into the traditions of Ayurveda, my education across India and North America has given me a particular vantage point: it allows me to stay true to the purity of traditional Ayurvedic principles while adapting their application thoughtfully to contemporary Western lives. I completed my foundational studies at the Maharishi School of Ayurveda and Sanskrit Studies in Bangalore, and later earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in Ayurveda.

I've practiced since 2000 under the mentorship of Dr. Hemant Gupta, BAMS, MD, and Dr. Shirish Nathwani, MD — integrating traditional Ayurvedic methods with modern medical insight. My approach gives real weight to the mental and emotional dimensions of health: stress, grief, addiction, and the dynamics of our relationships. By working through a psycho-spiritual lens, I hope to support my clients toward greater self-awareness, acceptance, and healing.

My own journey through loss and grief has deepened my empathy and shaped how I walk with others through life's inevitable uncertainties — with compassion, and without pretending the path is ever perfectly straight.

Alongside my private practice and my work at the Weil Center, I teach at the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture, and I speak regularly on Ayurveda, integrative wellness, and the mind-body connection.

When I'm not with patients, you'll likely find me training in Muay Thai — or, just as happily, sitting for hours doing absolutely nothing.
